uPVC doors are manufactured using the same multi-chambered, energy-efficient profile found in uPVC windows. These internal chambers help to reduce heat transfer, keeping your home warmer and more comfortable all year round. Composite doors, by contrast, are built from a combination of high-performance materials such as fiberglass, durohaults and durable outer skins. The right choice for your home will depend on your personal style, budget and the type of property you have. While composite doors are often the most popular choice, uPVC doors offer excellent value and reliable performance in a selection of styles.

In general, yes—composite doors tend to offer superior thermal performance, often achieving lower U-values than uPVC. For a front entrance door, where keeping heat in is especially important, a composite door is typically the best choice. For patio or garden doors, however, uPVC continues to deliver excellent performance. Both composite and uPVC doors are designed with energy efficiency in mind. Senator uPVC doors feature a thermally efficient five-chamber profile and high-performance sealing system to minimise heat loss, achieving U-values as low as 1.1 W/m²K with triple glazing. Senator’s Sentinel composite doors offer even higher levels of insulation, with U-values as low as 0.78 W/m²K for solid doors and 0.98 W/m²K for half-glazed styles. All U-values quoted include the frame, giving a true measure of overall door performance.
Aluminium doors typically cost more than equivalent uPVC doors. For patio and garden access doors, uPVC is the more cost-effective choice for most budgets. Aluminium is preferred where larger spans, more contemporary aesthetics, or higher structural loads are required. Senator offers a free quote for both.
In many cases, simple issues like stiff handles or a slightly misaligned latch can be resolved quickly and cost-effectively with a repair. However, if your door has a warped frame, failing seals, or is letting in draughts and losing heat, replacement is often the smarter long-term choice. Upgrading an older, inefficient door not only improves comfort but can also enhance your home’s energy performance.
