Six signs that you need to replace your windows

Window technology has come on leaps and bounds in the last ten years. Upgrading your windows to either double or triple glazing is a worthwhile investment. Replacing your old windows with more energy-efficient glazing makes a significant improvement to your home’s comfort and contributes to reducing your heating bills. But how will you know when to invest in new windows? Here are six signs that you need to replace your windows.

Condensation

One of the major indicators that you should replace is excessive condensation. If you notice that the inside of your glass is wet in the morning. Or with double glazed windows, if you see condensation between the panes of glass, it’s a sign that your windows insulation is no longer functioning. So, it’s time to start thinking about ordering replacement windows.

Draughts

Over the last few months, the comfort of our homes has come sharply into focus and this means making sure they are warm and free from draughts. Over time the seals on windows can wear down, which can cause draughts. Do you notice that your home feels colder near your windows? If you are unsure, one way to check is to hold a burning candle up to each edge of the window to see if you notice the flame flicker. If you do, it’s an indication that air is moving through the windows and you should consider replacing them.

Faulty mechanisms

Do you have windows that are painted shut or that are difficult to open or close? If the answer is yes, then you should consider replacing them. It’s a good idea to check all of your windows at least once a year to ensure they are all working well. Open and close each window to check for smooth operation. Poorly functioning latches or hinges will not only impact your windows performance but will also be a potential security risk.

Noise from outside

Does noise from outside disturb you? Single glazed or poor performing double glazed windows will do little to minimise noise travelling from outside into your home. If you live on a busy street, this can cause a lot of disturbance, especially at night when you are trying to sleep. Replacing your windows to double or triple glazing can offer a sound reduction of between 31 – 32 DB. Double glazed laminated glass will offer a reduction of 37 DB and triple glazed laminated glass will give a reduction of 40 DB. Making laminate glazed windows a great option if you live in a noisy area or on a busy road.

Decaying Window Frames

If you notice that your window frames are in poor condition, it is probably time to consider upgrading your windows. Decaying frames are common with timber windows which need continuous maintenance and protection from wet, damp weather. If you have timber windows, it is essential to look after them to prolong their life span. Replacing your windows is the ideal time to consider redecoration of any rooms that need a bit of a facelift. This is because you will need to touch up paintwork once the window installation is complete.

High Utility Bills

Replacing your old windows with either double or triple glazing is a great way to reduce your heating bills. Triple glazed windows, in particular, are a great choice if high utility bills are a concern. This is because there is a gap filled with an insulating gas between each pane of glass. The gas allows the sunlight to pass through the window while cutting down on the amount of heat escaping the rooms inside.

Because triple glazing has two layers of this gas, the windows give better thermal efficiency than double glazed windows, which only has one layer. Triple glazing is approximately 30% more thermally efficient than double glazing, so the energy saving is much higher, meaning your heating bills will be lower.
